The Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP), administered by the Employee Retirement System (ERS), offers two types of life insurance for active employees:
Basic Group Term Life Insurance
- Every employee enrolled in a GBP health plan is automatically enrolled in Basic Term Life Insurance. This plan pays $5,000 to your beneficiary in the event of your death and includes $5,000 of accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage.
Optional Term Life Insurance
- Provides additional coverage, including AD&D coverage, up to four times your annual salary (Election 1, 2, 3 or 4).
- The monthly premium is based on coverage election, your salary and your age.
- Enroll in optional life insurance within the first 31 calendar days of hire and be guaranteed insured for elections 1 and 2.
Dependent Term Life Insurance
- You can enroll your dependents in term life insurance. This plan includes $5,000 term life with $5,000 accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) for each covered dependent, for a monthly premium of just a few dollars.
Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)
- You may elect Voluntary AD&D coverage for yourself (employee only) or for yourself and your eligible dependents (employee and family) within 31 calendar days of hire. Evidence of Insurability (EOI) is not required when you elect Voluntary AD&D.
If you miss the initial enrollment period, you will need to wait until the Summer Enrollment period unless you experience a qualifying life event. In that case, you will have to complete evidence of insurability (EOI), and coverage is not guaranteed.
